Welcome to our Service for Ash Wednesday.

Grace, mercy and peace

from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ

be with you

and also with you.

Light your candle

Brothers and sisters in Christ, since early days Christians have observed with great devotion the time of our Lord’s passion and resurrection and prepared for this by a season of penitence and fasting.

us.

By carefully keeping these days, Christians take to heart the call to repentance and the assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel, and so grow in faith and in devotion to our Lord.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.

Holy God,

holy and strong,

holy and immortal,

have mercy upon us

The Collect

Holy God,

our lives are laid open before you:

rescue us from the chaos of sin

and through the death of your Son

bring us healing and make us whole

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Old Testament Reading Joel 2:12-17

12 “But even now,” says the Lord, “repent sincerely and return to me with fasting and weeping and mourning. 13 Let your broken heart show your sorrow; tearing your clothes is not enough.”

Come back to the Lord your God. He is kind and full of mercy; he is patient and keeps his promise; he is always ready to forgive and not punish. 14 Perhaps the Lord your God will change his mind and bless you with abundant crops. Then you can offer him grain and wine.

15 Blow the trumpet on Mount Zion; give orders for a fast and call an assembly! 16 Gather the people together; prepare them for a sacred meeting; bring the old people; gather the children and the babies too. Even newly married couples must leave their homes and come. 17 The priests, serving the Lord between the altar and the entrance of the Temple, must weep and pray: “Have pity on your people, Lord. Do not let other nations despise us and mock us by saying, ‘Where is your God?’”

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: John 8:1-11

Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

The Lord is a great God, O that today you would listen to his voice.

Harden not your hearts.

Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

8 Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach them. 3 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand before them all. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5 In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say?” 6 They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7 As they stood there asking him questions, he straightened up and said to them, “Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her.” 8 Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard this, they all left, one by one, the older ones first. Jesus was left alone, with the woman still standing there. 10 He straightened up and said to her, “Where are they? Is there no one left to condemn you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she answered.

“Well, then,” Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, but do not sin again.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Meditation

The hustle and bustle of the temple’s courts; the stalls selling animals for sacrifice were back and some of the money changers. Noise and dust, chatter and early morning sunshine; people start to gather round; what’s the news? Jesus is here- who is this man and what’s he got to say…

Some are genuinely intrigued; curious, hearts open to see if this is God; others just nosey; others frankly suspicious and cynical; and some deeply opposed. More than cycnical, minds are made up

Who does this man think he is?

Can we catch him out?

Elsewhere…There’s a rumour flying round. It’s that woman- they had been watching her and know they’ve got an opportunity. A curtain twitches; a shadow moves across a doorway. It’s her- and she shouldn’t be there- with him. They certainly shouldn’t be doing that – it’s sinful!

Voices shout, doors open, furniture crashes over – they grab her and drag her out.

What an opportunity- not only have the sinners got caught in the act but now that other trouble maker- that Jesus can be put to the test.

What’s he going to say about this?

In the Temple court, a distance hum becomes a commotion and a dusty noisy self righteous crowd coming running screaming, dragging yelling – everyone stops; stares. They arrive and fling her to the ground in front of him.

We caught her- breathless voices shout. We caught her. What d’you think? Stones? Here? Now?

Jesus breathes deeply and fixes his gaze on the dust at his feet.

He doesn’t look up; he doesn’t appear to see or hear them. The yelling does on- Well? Well? What d’you think?

Eventually he looks up; looks straight at them (not her), looks at them.

“Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her”

Who hasn’t done something, some little thing wrong. The yelling does down; the muttering rumbles round. Not one thing wrong; not one sin. It would be foolish to speak up- someone else would definitely pull you down. Not going to risk the humiliation of being put right.

Someone at the back slips away; then another and another. The younger angrier ones keep staring at him, at her in defiance. They look round- they’re the only ones left. Better go now rather than be the last man standing. The last one self consciously slips away.

She gets to her feet.

Jesus looks up. Looks at her. She shivers- will the judgement now fall?

Where are they? Is no-one left?

No, no sir she mutters.

Then go, Jesus says, no condemnation but a warning. Do not sin again.

Lots of wrongs, a few rights in this story.

Chief amongst the problems are those who condemn other people without looking to themselves.

Joel says:

repent sincerely and return to me with fasting and weeping and mourning. 13 Let your broken heart show your sorrow; tearing your clothes is not enough.”

Come back to the Lord your God. He is kind and full of mercy; he is patient and keeps his promise; he is always ready to forgive and not punish.

Come back to God sincerely. It’s not about what other people do; it’s about ourselves, myself. Not with an outward show to impress others but from my heart to my God whose heart is open to me.

Penitence

Blow out candle

Let us now call to mind our sin and the infinite mercy of God.

God the Father,

have mercy on us.

God the Son,

have mercy on us.

God the Holy Spirit,

have mercy on us.

Trinity of love,

have mercy on us.

Most merciful God,

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

we confess that we have sinned

in thought, word and deed.

We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength.

We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.

Lord, have mercy.

We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us.

We have not been true to the mind of Christ.

We have grieved your Holy Spirit.

Lord, have mercy.

We confess to you, Lord …

all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy and impatience of our lives.

Lord, have mercy.

Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people.

Lord, have mercy.

Our anger at our own frustration

and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves.

Lord, have mercy.

Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts

and our dishonesty in daily life and work.

Lord, have mercy.

Our negligence in prayer and worship

and our failure to commend the faith that is in us.

Lord, have mercy.

Accept our repentance, Lord …

for the wrongs we have done,

for our blindness to human need and suffering,

and our indifference to injustice and cruelty.

Accept our repentance, Lord.

For all false judgements,

for uncharitable thoughts towards our neighbours

and for our prejudice and contempt towards those who differ from us.

Accept our repentance, Lord.

For our waste and pollution of your creation

and our lack of concern for those who come after us.

Accept our repentance, Lord.

Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us.

Favourably hear us, for your mercy is great.

Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,

that we may show your glory in the world.

By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,

bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.

Silence is kept.

We have not loved you with our whole heart.

We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

In your mercy

forgive what we have been,

help us to amend what we are,

and direct what we shall be;

that we may do justly,

love mercy,

and walk humbly with you, our God.

Amen.

Mark yourself on your forehead with the ash from your candle

I invite you to receive your ashes

as a sign of the spirit of penitence with which we shall keep this season of Lent.

God our Father,

you create us from the dust of the earth:

grant that these ashes may be for us

a sign of our penitence

and a symbol of our mortality;

for it is by your grace alone

that we receive eternal life

in Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Amen.

Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.

Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.

The Lord enrich you with his grace,

and nourish you with his blessing;

the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil;

the Lord accept your prayers,

and absolve you from your offences,

for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour.

Amen.

The Peace

Since we are justified by faith,

we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has given us access to his grace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Holy Communion

The Lord is here

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

And now we give you thanks

because you give us the spirit of discipline,

that we may triumph over evil and grow in grace,

as we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery

with mind and heart renewed.

When we turned away

you did not reject us,

but came to meet us in your Son.

You embraced us as your children

and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life

that we might live in him and he in us.

He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night he was betrayed,

at supper with his friends

he took bread, and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to them, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

Father, we do this in remembrance of him:

his body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins; do this in remembrance of me.

Father, we do this in remembrance of him:

his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,

send your Holy Spirit

that this bread and this wine

may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.

As we eat and drink these holy gifts

make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.

With your whole Church throughout the world, we offer you this sacrifice of praise

and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

We break this bread

to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

This is love, not that we loved God,

but that he loved us and sent his Son.

He is the sacrifice for our sins,

that we might live through him.

If God loves us so much

we ought to love one another.

If we love one another

God lives in us.

Christ give you grace to grow in holiness,

to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class,

FATHER FORGIVE

The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own,

FATHER FORGIVE

The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth,

FATHER FORGIVE

Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others,

FATHER FORGIVE

Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee,

Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

The Collect:

Holy God,

you know the disorder of our sinful lives:

set straight our crooked hearts,

and bend our wills to love your goodness

and your glory

in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

New Testament Reading 2 Cor 4:3-6

3 For if the gospel we preach is hidden, it is hidden only from those who are being lost. 4 They do not believe, because their minds have been kept in the dark by the evil god of this world. He keeps them from seeing the light shining on them, the light that comes from the Good News about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. 5 For it is not ourselves that we preach; we preach Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 The God who said, “Out of darkness the light shall shine!” is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts, to bring us the knowledge of God's glory shining in the face of Christ.

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading: Mark 9:2-9

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain, where they were alone. As they looked on, a change came over Jesus, 3 and his clothes became shining white—whiter than anyone in the world could wash them. 4 Then the three disciples saw Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus. 5 Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, “Teacher, how good it is that we are here! We will make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 He and the others were so frightened that he did not know what to say.

7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them with its shadow, and a voice came from the cloud, “This is my own dear Son—listen to him!” 8 They took a quick look around but did not see anyone else; only Jesus was with them.

9 As they came down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has risen from death.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

This week’s gospel reading is the transfiguration

It’s one of the key moments in the gospel accounts when the disciples see Jesus for who he really is. They have had other times- at his baptism when God declares “this is my beloved son”; the evidence grows through the miracles and teaching- when they are astounded by what Jesus does and by how he teaches with authority- and not like the scribes…

And now on the mountain top- these three key disciples see Jesus transformed. It’s like they see him clearly for the first time. But they’re still really confused.

Why don’t they get it straightaway?

The disciples are called from their ordinary lives and so come with their own bunch of assumptions and expectations. Some of them are zealots- revolutionaries, perhaps even what we would call terrorists…. They want the overthrow of the current political order. Kick out our oppressors and take back control!

Others might just want life to be better, fairer, or are seeking what their faith has always promised: a rescuer- someone who would come and lead their people as God wants. Actually we’re not really told much about the disciples’ motivation for following Jesus- even when we know something of their background.

They took until after the resurrection and then some time as the early church grew to recognise truly who Jesus is and what it means to be a follower; they had a limited understanding that the kingdom of God- (which Jesus spoke about all the time) was a multicultural, international movement for all people from ever race and background and language group. John proclaims it in Revelation- but that was written decades after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

SO what are the key things that the transfiguration proclaims?

Jesus is holy; he is not like another human prophet or magician or revolutionary leader. The shining white robes indicate something else. He is without fault or wrongdoing. He is holy! And God’s presence is in the cloud; Peter, James and John would have recognised that from their history. The pillar of cloud that guided the Israelites through the wilderness. God himself is specially present with Jesus. And finally- God’s voice is heard. All this affirms Jesus again and again. The voice cries out -Listen to him!

Jesus is recognised by Moses- who is the one who gave the people their law and Elijah- who is seen as chief amongst the prophets. The law and the prophets are the two essential ways that Jews discerned truth. Jesus himself affirms the greatest commandment by quoting “the law and the prophets”!

This underlines that he is the one that all the Jewish tradition is looking for. These key leaders of the Jewish people are seen at this key moment. All the evidence stacks up; so many things add together.

Jesus is the one sent from God; he is even equal with God.

So Jesus is indeed the person that God’s people have been longing for.

What does this tell us about the kingdom of God?

Jesus is the King of the kingdom. At this moment, the focus is on Jesus; affirmed by God, rooted in the history of God’s people, presented to the not-yet-understanding disciples.

But we glimpse forward into the kingdom. Peter, James, and John were almost literally blown away on the mountain top. And they were radically transformed- even if it was over a period time once they came down; they didn’t get it all at once but they came to understand that the kingdom was not just for one type of person, not one people group or background or tribe or nation but for all people in all places at all times.

We heard too in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians about how the good news was hidden by God’s enemy (the evil god of this world). People are in darkness; the good news comes as light from God.

What does that mean for us? What does it mean particularly on Racial Justice Sunday?

The disciples weren’t expecting all the consequences of following Jesus. They probably weren’t really expecting much of what then happened to them. It wasn’t comfortable; it wasn’t what they had signed up for.

So- be prepared to be challenged.

And in the course of following Jesus, and particularly after the resurrection and when they received the Holy Spirit, they were transformed. From people who hid away frightened for their own future to those who went about loudly proclaiming in word and deed- that Jesus was the one the world was waiting for. Their priorities changed; they also had to confront their prejudices. It wasn’t good news for just one place or nation but for the whole world. And they started mixing with all sorts of people including those whom they once thought of as less worthy or their enemies. The good news is for all, not just their friends.

So be prepared to be changed.

And finally, become spreaders of God’s light. Often we’re not aware of our own faults and failings; we don’t see if we’re blind to our privileges or prejudices. We need God’s Holy Spirit to show us; we should listen to other people’s experiences and try to walk in their shoes. Then shape our actions to reflect what God’s kingdom looks like.

The Creed

Let us declare our faith in God.

We believe in God the Father,

from whom every family

in heaven and on earth is named.

We believe in God the Son,

who lives in our hearts through faith,

and fills us with his love.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

differences non-violently and respectfully and have the courage to model it

in our own behaviour.

Fill our spirits Lord, that we may minister justice.

Clear our minds Lord, that we may unlearn and relearn.

Energise our words and actions, that we may be people of presence and peace.

In Jesus’ name these things we pray, Amen.

The Peace

God has made us one in Christ.

He has set his seal upon us and, as a pledge of what is to come,

has given the Spirit to dwell in our hearts. Alleluia.

Let us offer another a sign of peace

Holy Communion

The Lord is here.

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Almighty God, good Father to us all,

your face is turned towards your world.

In love you gave us Jesus your Son

to rescue us from sin and death.

Your Word goes out to call us home

to the city where angels sing your praise.

We join with them in heaven’s song:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and God of might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest

Father of all, we give you thanks

for every gift that comes from heaven.

To the darkness Jesus came as your light.

With signs of faith and words of hope

he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

The crowds came out to see your Son,

yet at the end they turned on him.

On the night he was betrayed

he came to table with his friends

to celebrate the freedom of your people.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food;

he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

This is my body, given for you all.

Jesus then gave thanks for the wine;

he took the cup, gave it and said:

This is my blood, shed for you all

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in remembrance of me.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup

we celebrate the cross

on which he died to set us free.

Defying death he rose again

and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Spirit on us now

that by these gifts we may feed on Christ

with opened eyes and hearts on fire.

May we and all who share this food

offer ourselves to live for you

and be welcomed at your feast in heaven

where all creation worships you,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many we are one body because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God

have mercy on us.

Jesus bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

that we may perfectly love you,

All Amen.

Our Confession:

Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen.

The Absolution

Almighty God,

who forgives all who truly repent,

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Psalm104:26-end The African Project

The Gospel Reading: John 1:1-14

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

Glory to you, O Lord

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ

Hymn Jesus is Lord

The Sermon

We have had 3 readings today- one of which was admittedly a song- but what is the simple link between all of them?

The whole of Psalm 104 beautifully sung by the African project, reflects back on Genesis- the very beginning of all life, and it talks about the wonders and glory of creation- the part set for today talks about the wonders of the creatures of the deep. It is a wonderous psalm which starts

“Bless the Lord, O my Soul”.

Our Gospel reading is from John and the whole aim- the whole purpose of this Gospel is to prove conclusively that Jesus is the Son of God.

In John 1 the gospel reflects back on creation, as well, but in these deeply profound verses John places the person of Christ, The Word made flesh, at the beginning of all things.

“The Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made”.

Jesus is God in human flesh. Fully human, fully divine. John’s gospel is not-like the other gospels, a biography of Jesus’ life but more a thematic presentation of Jesus’ life.

There needed to be a new understanding of the Word and this was the gospel that was the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Along with this passage from John 1 we have heard the passage from Paul’s letter to the Colossians. Its’ opening is one of the most profound statements about the divine nature of Christ. There is no wiggle room here. Not only is he equal to God, he is God, he is the exact physical revelation of God. It is yet again an allusion back to Genesis- the beginning of all things- back to creation.

The church at Colossae came into existence from one of the massive movements of evangelism linked to Paul’s mission to Ephesus.

Influences from the outside world were beginning to creep in- because these new Christian churches were surrounded by other nations who worshipped pagan gods.

There was a growing movement at the time in the belief that matter was evil. So if matter was evil:

1. How would God come to earth in human form.

2. How could God create evil (world)

3. They claimed Christ was not the unique Son of God but one of many intermediaries between God and humanity

4. refused to believe that Christ was source of salvation- insisting that God could only be found through special and secret knowledge.

Paul’s response:

Paul’s response to this ….(see slide and read the following)

1. Everything was created by Christ which means that all thrones and dominions are under him- both of this world and the spiritual world. Christ has no equal- therefore Lord of all.

2. In God everything is held together- not just creator but sustainer too. Therefore Christ is the sustainer of all life, and all life is dependant on him.

3. By Christ’s resurrection he has conquered the ultimate destroyer of this material world-death. All who trust in Christ will receive eternal life through him- through his death he has been raised up and exalted to the highest throne. This was to refute the Greek idea that Jesus could not be human and divine at the same time. Christ was the embodiment of God- the Word made flesh. When we have Christ we have God in all his human form. Each equal- not one more than the other.

4. Christ’s death on the cross gave us the reconciliation for our relationship with the Father to be healed. We need to trust in God to be saved. By accepting Christ we are reconciled with God. Christ died in our place so we can have peace with God. Christ is the head of the body- the church. And all members of the church have their own part to play- their own calling in the service of Christ. Just as the head directs all the other organs in the body, so Christ directs our actions too in the church and in our community.

As a church we have a responsibility to tell the Good news of the Gospel- to bring hope and Christ’s light to those who seem to live in the shadows. And under this pandemic we have seen many living in the shadows- the shadow of fear, of illness, of not being able to see our loved ones-especially those living in continuing care homes. But there has been light….

One such example is Captain Sir Tom Moore…

As we move ever forward we know that we are church, and the real church is not a building, we are the family of God. A people of faith, love and commitment to each other and a people who will always serve one church, one faith and one Lord. Amen.

The Creed

Let us declare our faith in God.

We believe in God the Father,

from whom every family

in heaven and on earth is named.

We believe in God the Son,

who lives in our hearts through faith,

and fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,

who strengthens us

with power from on high.

We believe in one God;

Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Song- O Lord my God when I in awesome wonder

Holy Communion

The Lord is here.

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Therefore with all the angels of heaven

we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name

and sing our joyful hymn of praise:

Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food;

he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

This is my body, given for you all.

Jesus then gave thanks for the wine;

he took the cup, gave it and said:

Amen.

We continue in the prayer that Jesus taught us… the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many we are one body because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God

have mercy on us.

Jesus bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

Draw near with faith.

Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ

which he gave for you,

and his blood which he shed for you.

Eat and drink

in remembrance that he died for you,

and feed on him in your hearts

by faith with thanksgiving.

Song during Holy Communion Ubi Caritas

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.
