Opening Prayer

We gather in the image of the Creator

Who is in a community of love

We gather in the name of the Redeemer

Who reconciles all of creation

We gather in the presence of the Life Giver

Who inspires new life and renews it.

Song Bless the Lord oh my soul

Psalm 65

1 Praise awaits[b] you, our God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled. 2 You who answer prayer, to you all people will come. 3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave[c] our transgressions. 4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.

5 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Saviour, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, 6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, 7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. 8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.

9 You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it.[d] 10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. 11 You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. 12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. 13 The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing. Amen

Collect

Creator God,

You made the goodness of the land,

The riches of the sea

And the rhythm of the seasons;

As we thank you for the harvest,

May we cherish and respect

This planet and all its peoples,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Song…We plough the fields and scatter

Confession

We praise you God, for the earth that sustains life. Through the planetary cycles of days and seasons, renewal and growth, you open your hand to give all creatures our food in the proper time. In your wisdom you gave a Sabbath for the land to rest. In our greed we have not allowed the land to rest and the earth is struggling to renew and so we come to say sorry…

You call us to pause from the busyness of working to let the land rest, free from the burden of production.

We are sorry for the greed which demands that the earth produce beyond its limits

You call us to be stewards of your creation

We are sorry we have forgotten that all things come from you

You call us to share our resources

We are sorry that we do not consider the needs of the poor

You call us to be people of fairness, upholding justice.

We are sorry for our lack of faith, not loving you with our whole hearts and not loving our neighbours as ourselves.

The Absolution

Almighty God,

who forgives all who truly repent,

have mercy upon you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and keep you in life eternal;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Old Testament Reading

Deuteronomy 8:7-18 read by John F.

New International Version

7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.

12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.

16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

Gospel reading- The Rich Fool Luke 12:16-30

Quiz over to Ally and Keith

Talk

Luke 12 v 16-30 The Rich Fool (Deut 8 v 8-17)

Quiz......Over to Keith and Ally

May I speak in the name of the Living God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen

Today in both of our readings- Deuteronomy and Luke, we hear of God’s providence- his great generosity.

To put things into context, in Deuteronomy, the Israelites have been wandering in the wilderness now for forty years and God has tested them- not everything was easy for them.

They not only suffered hunger in their stomachs for food, but also for God’s word. The few verses before our reading give us the scripture Christ quoted back to Satan during the forty days he spent in the wilderness being tempted by Satan to turn stones into bread but...

Jesus said

”Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” .

The Israelites had been fed, not only by the manna from heaven, but also quails of the air and fresh water from the rock.

This time in the desert was also a time of discipline- obeying the commands of God would eventually bring the Israelites to the promised land

It was also a turning point- a new start for this nation. They were on the verge of crossing the Jordan into the Promised Land.

And this wasn’t just any land, but one which was rich in wheat crops, vines, fig trees, olive oil and honey. The rocks themselves were rich in ores of copper and Iron. They would never want for anything-they would never go hungry again. Their obedience to God- really their part of the Covenant, would give them what their hearts longed for- a land to call their own- their home.

And God had given them guidelines how to behave on two stone tablets- which were the

Ten Commandments

Yet all this providence- this resource richness, would not just fall into their laps so they did not have to work. They would work the land and graze their animals and dig out the minerals. They would increase in numbers so they would be as numerous as the stars, as promised to Abraham so long ago.

But in all this work, they were to remember who had led them here and where their blessings had actually come from.

When you visualise the rich fool in our Gospel reading from Luke, do you picture him like this

Or like this…?

I think this might depend on your age!

In the story, the fool -who has probably worked hard on the land-or at least paid others to, has had a bumper crop. This is not a bad thing. In his common sense, he has thought he would therefore build a bigger barn to store his great harvest. And having done so, he will have put by for his retirement. All this seems a very sensible thing to do- and as we get older we have a greater understanding of trying to put something by to help us out in our later years.

In the time of Jesus there was no state pension.

But then the story goes wrong because instead of him looking after those around him who were much less well off, the poor, the homeless…he just settles back to having a good life for himself. And in the story, God takes his life that night- so all his thoughts and plans for an easy life for himself go out of the window!

For those people who are cautious with their money, putting a little by for a rainy day/ retirement, this story seems mean. But it is not aimed at criticising trying to be careful or cautious. It is targetting the motives behind what we do.

It is directing us back to the source of all blessing.

We can so easily think that we are in control, that it is only our hard work that has got us this far, that has produced such great abundance and blessing in our lives. We need to remember that ultimately everything comes from God. And just as easily as we can receive, so easily it can be taken away.

Jesus told this parable to show the root of the real problem which was greed.

The focus for this rich fool needed to change from material things, to the wealth which really mattered- spiritual wealth. Once God takes away the physical life, so too go the material possessions. For ourselves, we need to be investing in our spiritual wealth which is stored for our eternal life to come.

Preparing for life before death is excellent, not preparing for life after death is disastrous.

Worrying about coping in the future is natural, and although it is good to plan ahead, we only have to have faith to realise that God knows just what we need and he will meet those needs but not necessarily our desires.

Jesus used the examples of both the ravens and the lilies.

Seeking God’s kingdom means you put its’ king at the heart of all you do and in doing so you become a good citizen.

So how can we build up our heavenly treasures-what makes us rich in God’s eyes?

Faith in God

Service to God (means serving those around us in need)

and Obedience to God.

To be in a right relationship with God all these 3 have to be in place and to do this we have to let God be in control of our lives, our hearts, our minds and our wills.

Jesus said

“I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”.

Following in the Way- following Jesus, living our lives as he would want us to, will gain us riches in heaven so immeasurable, that no earthly bank vault (or barn) could ever store. Amen.

Song… Song- Creation sings the Father’s Song

Holy Communion

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation;

you bring forth bread from the earth.

Blessed be God for ever.

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation;

you create the fruit of the vine.

Blessed be God for ever.

The Lord is here

His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation;

in your love you made us for yourself.

When we turned away

you did not reject us,

but came to meet us in your Son.

You embraced us as your children

and welcomed us to sit and eat with you.

In Christ you shared our life

that we might live in him and he in us.

He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin.

On the night he was betrayed,

at supper with his friends

he took bread, and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to them, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

Father, we do this in remembrance of him:

his body is the bread of life.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,

he gave you thanks, and said:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins;

do this in remembrance of me.

Father, we do this in remembrance of him:

his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory,

send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine

may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son.

As we eat and drink these holy gifts

make us one in Christ, our risen Lord.

With your whole Church throughout the world

we offer you this sacrifice of praise

and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

We break this bread

to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

Draw near with faith.

Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ

which he gave for you,

and his blood which he shed for you.

Eat and drink

in remembrance that he died for you,

and feed on him in your hearts

by faith with thanksgiving.

Song during Holy Communion

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Exodus 16:2-15 read by Sarah

And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us?”

8 And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD.”

9 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. 11 And the LORD said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’”

13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. 15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.

Song: I am the bread of Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhdFESRoy5k

Gospel Reading Matthew 20:1-16 read by Theresa

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard.

2 After agreeing with the labourers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ 5 So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’

8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the labourers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. 10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13 But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last.”

Sermon: Moses’ Story Part 5: Bread from Heaven

Last week was the great story of God’s rescue - taking his people from slavery to freedom, through the waters of the Red Sea – God Rescues.

This week is the account of God providing food for his people in the wilderness – God provides.

However, we saw something of it last week and this week, it’s written loud and clear. The story could be called- and everyone moaned.

What about all this grumbling?

What do we make of all the moaning that’s going on? The people have escaped from slavery to freedom- shouldn’t they be happy? They rejoiced in the last chapter!

But now we’re a few weeks on- perhaps into the second month of walking in the desert. The euphoria of the first escape is over; the terror and excitement of getting through the sea is forgotten. Now there is just day after day of long, hard, hot walking.

The trouble with being a slave is that you have no control. You have to do whatever someone else tells you. And so if there’s difficulty or hardship- you know exactly who to blame. But here, as free people, they are on their own with just Moses and Aaron and God to lead them. So the people treated them as they had their old leaders.

It’s your fault; we were better off in Egypt (they definitely weren’t) – and you did this to kill us!

The people are still thinking like slaves. They need to learn to take responsibility for themselves. And to trust God.

The people need to learn that there is no quick fix. They’re in this for the long haul. Grumblers want to give up.

It scary to take responsibility; it’s frightening to not know what’s going to happened next.

But God is still there for them- and has provided Aaron and Moses to lead them.

And just a word for all those who are parents, workers, carers, anyone who has any responsibility for anything or anyone. Don’t expect to be thanked- all of the time.

I think it was particularly tough for Moses and Aaron.. Yes they had seen miracles- and been specially selected for this job. Of course God was with them- and their names go down in history for all time for what they have done. But each day? I bet it was tough. Not knowing the end from the beginning; being undermined constantly by those they cared for… does any of this sound familiar?

I guess there is a warning about not seeking fame or power or leadership to make us feel good. Because, if we do it right, it probably won’t feel great all of the time.

But where is God?

God sees, God hears and God provides…

What does God providing look like? Well – God’s provision came with some clear instructions. The people were to go out and collect enough for each day. There’s a immediate connection for us who pray Give us today our daily bread . God’s provision was enough for each day; and there was enough left over for the seventh day.

God gives us what we need. That’s why we pray for daily bread. We don’t get daily cake; God gives us what we need.

But they needed to go out and get it. They had to collect the manna and the quails; they had work to do. God’s provision might drop out of the sky for them but it doesn’t fall into their laps. Our efforts and God’s provision go together.

God provides and also teaches us.

I’ve prayed more honestly and fervently during lock down than I have done for a long time. There have been some big scary issues for people I love- that I could do nothing about. So I’ve prayed for what we need. And seen God provide answers. God has taught me that he’s faithful; that when I can’t see a way out, he can find one; God has taught me to persist in prayer..

God taught the people as they cried out. Firstly- they were to cry out to Him. They complained against Moses but they were heard by God. We are to take our needs to God.

God gave them what they needed- though not perhaps what they expected.

So they learnt that God provides.

But God also laid down another principle. There was anough on the sixth day for the seventh. Day 7 was going to become their Sabbath or worship day. God met their needs so they had enough to worship him. God meets our physical needs but also our spiritual need. They needed to worship God and have their faith grown just as much as they needed the daily food.

And just to remind them all- the pillar of cloud reappeared, showing that God was there with them.

for God’s holy people.

Jesus Christ is holy,

Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.

The Dismissal

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.

The Israelites have been rescued from slavery in Egypt. God let them pass through the Red Sea on dry land with a wall of sea on either side. And now they are in the wilderness and they are beginning to moan. Listen to their story…

When you take a long trip, where do you get food to eat? Usually you stop at a restaurant and buy some. Or sometimes you pack your lunch in a picnic and take it along. The Israelites were on a really long trip. Where were they going to get food? They couldn't carry enough to last them. They didn't stay any place long enough to grow any. There were no stores to stop at. And they numbered a million or more people. That's a lot to feed.

The Story:

God’s people were on a journey to a land they would call their very own. God promised them that they would have their own land so this became known to as “The Land of Promise” or the “Promised Land”.

To get to their new home the people had to walk many miles across a desert. After a few days of travel the people were very thirsty. The only water they found tasted so bitter that they could not even drink it.

God continued to take care of his people on their journey. During the day God placed a pillar (or tower) of cloud in front of them so they would know the correct way to go Even though they were in a desert he led them to other places where there was plenty of water to drink.

They were led by a pillar of cloud in the day…

And a pillar of fire by night…

After more than a month the people of God arrived in a place called the “Desert of Sin” and made camp. Soon all of the food was gone and the people began to doubt that God could take care of them. They complained to Moses and his brother Aaron. Sadly, they even told Moses that their lives were better back in Egypt where they had been slaves. They said Egypt was better than the desert.

But God never forgot his people. God told Moses that food was about to rain down out of heaven. As Moses and the people looked out into the desert they saw a big cloud. They knew that the glory of God was in the cloud.

And God did just as he said. Every evening a great flock of quail (birds) would fly into the camp. The people would gather them and eat them. And in the morning, when the people woke up, little white flakes (like wafers) covered the ground. The people called this manna.

Each day they gathered the manna and took it home to make bread. But God told the people to only gather enough manna to feed their family. God wanted them to do exactly as he said and remember that he would take care of them.

But some of the people did not listen. They were greedy and gathered more than God had told them to. They thought they could save some for later. This seemed like a good idea at first but then they noticed that the extra manna began to rot and stink. Soon the manna was full of worms. These people realized that they should have listened to God.

There was another way God wanted the people to remember him. He told the people that the seventh day of the week would be a day of rest. They were to stop working on this day and make it special. This was a holy day set aside for God and it was to be called the Sabbath Day.

There would be no manna on the ground on the Sabbath day. Instead, God told the people to gather extra manna the day before the Sabbath and to prepare bread and save it to eat on the Sabbath. Unlike the other days the extra manna did not rot and fill with worms.

Now it is time for our song….I reach up high-get ready!

Craft activity

Make a balloon quail.

Play "Catch the Quail" Balloon Game

What you will need:

Orange, Brown or Tan Balloons

Orange, Brown or Tan Paper

Markers

Sellotape

What to do:

1. Before class prepare some balloons to look like quail. (Make sure you make at least one per child.)

2. Draw faces on the balloon with a black permanent marker and tape or glue on wings cut from construction paper.

Play Catch Quail Game

Put a paper plate or bowl onto a paint-stick and put the balloon bird onto it.

Then try getting the bird to the other side of the room without it falling off. If you do not have a paper plate or dish, you could try carrying it on your head (much more difficult).
