Jacob and Esau

Our bible story continues this week with the story of Esau and Jacob- twin brothers. But this is still a small part of God’s great big story…time for a song

God’s love is big, God’s love is great.

And it is this big great love of God that is in our story today. He loved Abraham and Sarah very much and gave them their longed for son Isaac. Now Isaac is all grown up and needs a wife so that God’s promise to Abraham can be fulfilled.

God would make Abraham’s descendants as countless as the stars in the sky.

Last week we learned about Abraham’s servant travelling to another country to find Isaac a wife. He found her by a well. Rebekah had gone there to get water and when she offered Abraham's servant water and enough for his camels, he knew that Rebekah was the right woman for Isaac.

Rebekah left her home with Abraham's servant to be with Isaac and they saw Isaac while he was in the field. Rebekah put on her veil to cover her face. Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah and he loved her. Abraham lived 175 years.

Rebekah didn't have a baby for 20 years, and then they had twins! They didn’t look alike at all. The first baby was all hairy and red and they called him Esau which means red. Then his brother was born. They named him Jacob. Jacob means ‘holder of the heel.’ Isaac was 60 when they were born.

So let’s hear the story of Esau and Jacob.

God told Rebekah that even though Jacob was the younger son, he would have the birthright.

** Usually the older son received the birthright. A birthright in Bible times was a custom that the oldest received 2 different blessings. The things that you have around you, like money, land, food and animals were given to the oldest twice as much as the other children the father has. The firstborn was also considered head of the family. The other part of the blessing, being the oldest, meant he offered the sacrifices and taught the family about God. Eventually, these men were ancestors to Jesus.

The boys grew up and Esau was a skilful hunter. He liked to be outside. He was a big strong man with hair all over him. Isaac loved Esau the most. But Jacob liked to stay inside in the tent. And Rebekah love Jacob the most because he was a gentle man and stayed in the tents.

One day Jacob cooked a stew and when Esau came in from the field, he was so hungry and tired, Esau asked Jacob for some of the stew. Jacob said “Sell me your birthright and you can have some.” Esau replied to Jacob “Well, I’m so hungry I’m about to die anyway, so why not?” Jacob gave Esau bread and stew, and then Esau was sorry that he had made the trade.

(Genesis 27:1) Years later Isaac was sick and couldn’t see well. Isaac called the oldest son, Esau in to see him. Isaac was also very rich and didn’t think he was going to live much longer. Isaac told Esau "Go hunt a deer and cook it for me as I like it and bring it to me." Rebekah heard this and told Jacob. She told Jacob to get 2 goats and she would cook them for Isaac how he liked it.

After the meat was cooked, Rebekah put clothing on Jacob and fur from a goat on his hands and neck to make him hairy like his brother Esau. Rebekah wanted Jacob to fool Isaac! So, that is what Jacob did. Jacob told Isaac that he was his brother, Esau. When Isaac asked Jacob how he found the meat so fast, Jacob replied that God put it there for him.

Isaac said, “Come over here and let me feel you to see if you are Esau.” Isaac said “You sound like Jacob, but feel like Esau.” Isaac ate the meat and gave the blessing to Jacob that should have gone to the firstborn son, Esau.

As soon as Isaac was done with the blessing, Esau came in from hunting and took the food in to Isaac. Isaac said “I have already eaten and given the blessing. Your brother came in and deceived me.”

Esau was so angry with Jacob; Esau said he would kill Jacob. Rebekah heard about this and sent Jacob to her brother’s house to keep Jacob safe until Esau wasn’t so angry.

Taken from

There are several things very wrong in this story:

1. Isaac did not love his children equally, he loved Esau more than Jacob.

2. Rebekah didn’t love her children equally- she loved Jacob more than Esau and encouraged him to do wrong and steal Esau’s birth-right (like a formal blessing making him head of the household on Isaac’s death).

3. Jacob knew what he was doing was wrong- but did it anyway.

4. Esau was very angry- so angry he wanted to kill his brother.

Questions for you to think about…

· Have you ever been encouraged to do something which you know is wrong?

· And did you do it?

· Have you ever been really angry with someone- so much so that you really hated them?

It is difficult in life when we feel we have been wronged and even more difficult to forgive.

Jesus knew this would be difficult for us, so he put a line into the special prayer he gave us…The Lord’s Prayer.

Let us pray this together...

Our Father in heaven

Hallowed by your name

Your kingdom come

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us”

Lead us not into temptation

But deliver us from evil

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours

Now and for ever. Amen.

This is a prayer to help us through each day of our lives because God wants what is best for us. It helps us to forgive.

Craft ideas

1. Esau and Jacob

Esau and Jacob were twins- Esau was a hairy man and Jacob’s skin was smooth.

Needed 1 sheet of paper with a fold down the middle.

On the top sheet, draw a man making sure his arm and leg ends on the fold. Cut him out. When you unfold the paper you will have two men exactly the same (which is what twin brothers are, although they make look different).

Decorate one in bits of wool (or spaghetti strands) or anything “hairy”. This is Esau. The other is Jacob.

2. Fire and Stew-pot

Use your imagination to make this…..You will need some tall sticks, some smaller sticks for firewood and some orange and yellow paper for the flames. Some cotton to tie it all up with, a paperclip to hang the stew-pot. Cut out a yoghurt pot to make the pot. Have a go!

And finally…our song

Gonna jump up and down

This week’s story: Isaac and Rebekah: https://youtu.be/xrwZrMzX09o

Isaac, Abraham and Sarah’s son, is now all grown up. Abraham wants him to marry someone who will also follow God and see God’s promises fulfilled. So their servant goes on a long, long journey to find the right person to be Isaac’s wife. He prays that God would show him the right person. Rebekah offers to take care of the weary travellers who come to her well and looks after their camels too. Then they know that she’s the right person to marry Isaac. Isaac and Rebekah love each other very much.

Travelling around in those days across the desert meant having camels to carry all your things. And Abraham’s family sent loads of presents to give to the person who would marry Isaac. There was a lot to carry!

Make a camel to carry the presents!

Use the cotton or wool in your pack to make a friendship bracelet – Isaac gave Rebekah bracelets and rings as a sign of his love for her.

Here’s a video to remind us how to make a 3 strand plait. https://youtu.be/qxJY4lna5q0

Or how about 4 strands? https://youtu.be/x9LxFmOZNls

A reminder about praying: Abraham’s servant prayed when he need God to show him what to do. Here’s how to ask God for help in our lives:

We meet in the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Song: In celebration of 72 years of the NHS

Everyone needs compassion

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

We come to say sorry to God:

Father God, you have promised to hear us

When we call to you.

Lord we confess our sins.

Keep your promise and forgive us we pray

For the times when we have hurt others through the words we have said,

Lord we confess our sins.

Keep your promise and forgive us, we pray.

For the times when our actions have been harmful and not loving,

Lord we confess our sins.

Keep your promise and forgive us, we pray.

For the times when we have forgotten you and ignored your commands,

Lord we confess our sins.

Keep your promise and forgive us, we pray.

And hear God’s forgiveness…….

The Collect

Gracious Father,

by the obedience of Jesus

you brought salvation to our wayward world:

draw us into harmony with your will,

that we may find all things

restored in him,

our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-end

Genesis 24:47-61 read by Faith's Family

“Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms, 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son. 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”

58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,” she said.

59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,

“Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the cities of their enemies.”

61 Then Rebekah and her attendants got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

The Talk……………………..by Keith

The Creed

Let us declare our faith in God.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father,

source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?

We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,

who took our human nature,

died for us and rose again?

We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,

who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world?

We believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.

This is our faith.

We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

As this Sunday we are celebrating 72 years of our NHS Our Prayers today are lead by our very own healthcare professionals

The Peace

The peace of the Lord be always with you

and also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

Song When I needed a neighbour

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

Almighty God, good Father to us all,

your face is turned towards your world.

In love you gave us Jesus your Son

to rescue us from sin and death.

Your Word goes out to call us home

to the city where angels sing your praise.

We join with them in heaven's song: (sung)

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord,

Holy is the Lord God Almighty

Who was and is and is to come

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord

Father of all, we give you thanks

for every gift that comes from heaven.

To the darkness Jesus came as your light.

With signs of faith and words of hope

he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

The crowds came out to see your Son,

yet at the end they turned on him.

On the night he was betrayed

he came to table with his friends

to celebrate the freedom of your people.

This is his story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Jesus blessed you, Father, for the food;

he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said:

This is my body, given for you all.

Jesus then gave thanks for the wine;

he took the cup, gave it and said:

This is my blood, shed for you all

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in remembrance of me.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup

we celebrate the cross

on which he died to set us free.

Defying death he rose again

and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world.

This is our story.

This is our song:

Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Spirit on us now

that by these gifts we may feed on Christ

with opened eyes and hearts on fire.

May we and all who share this food

offer ourselves to live for you

and be welcomed at your feast in heaven

where all creation worships you,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

Blessing and honour and glory and power

be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many we are one body because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God

have mercy on us.

Jesus bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

Draw near with faith.

Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ

which he gave for you,

and his blood which he shed for you.

Eat and drink

in remembrance that he died for you,

and feed on him in your hearts

by faith with thanksgiving.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the benefits you have given me,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.

O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,

may I know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.

Song: Song: Lord I lift your name on high

The Dismissal

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.
