God tests Abraham’s faith by asking him to make a great sacrifice but as Abraham obeys- God steps in and repeats his promise to Abraham.

“I will make you the father of a great nation which will bless the whole earth – your descendants will be as many as the stars in the sky”

The Story of Abraham and Isaac

We meet in the name of the Father,

and of the Son,

The Sacrifice of Isaac

22 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy[a] will go over there and worship and come again to you.” 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. The Talk……ABRAHAM AND ISAAC

I know the church does not celebrate Father’s day which was last Sunday, but there is something to be said about this particular father…Abraham. God said he would be the father of a great nation. To do that he gave up just about everything he ever had to follow God- to keep the faith. The price of that faith nearly cost him his beloved son- or at least that is how it seemed. So how did it go so wrong…let’s recap.

Abraham never had it easy- he has already uprooted his family to follow God to a new land.

He has had to say goodbye to his other son and his mother and really had to rely on God to keep them safe.

And now God sends his most trying test of faith.

Abraham’s test of faith will stand throughout all history. All that God had promised Abraham now stood in jeopardy. What was God up to? Had he changed his mind?

This whole test of faith was appalling emotionally and theologically because it was only through Isaac that all God’s blessing would be fulfilled.

When the call came to Abraham, he didn’t outwardly argue and his obedience was prompt and complete. They had to travel 50 miles to Moriah to this place appointed by God for the sacrifice. Abraham didn’t delay, this was a response from the heart for not only the love of God but also a sense of duty. Had he delayed for any length of time, his mind would have hardened his heart to God’s command and instead dwelt on his love for his son.

I expect he didn’t tell Sarah.

This was to be a sacrifice of the heart and spirit.

Having arrived at Moriah, Abraham went on further with Isaac to the appointed place. He gave him the wood to carry for the sacrifice.

And they journeyed on.

Isaac was well versed in the ritual of sacrifice and asked the key question

“My Father…Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

To which Abraham replied “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son”

These very words- my father and my son, must have cut Abraham’s heart to the core. They were the last words Abraham heard or spoke to his son before the sacrifice took place. What is surprising in this account, is the lack of argument from Isaac- he seemed to just comply with what his father wished as Abraham bound him and laid him upon the wood. Isaac was to die at the hand of his own father and the light of the promise was to be extinguished.

BUT...

God only required a sacrifice of the heart not of the flesh. God abhorred the pagan sacrifices. He wanted Abraham to sacrifice Isaac in his heart to show that Abraham loved God more than Isaac.

Of course, Isaac was not sacrificed. God stopped the whole proceeding and a ram, caught in the thicket was used instead.

So what does this tell us about God?

God wants us, to put God first and right at the heart of everything that we do.

That following God is not easy, he does not always lead us down the direct road. There will be twists and turns along the way- there will be sideroads that we should avoid. The journey will have challenges, but God will never leave us to face them alone.

That the only sacrifice God wants is our hearts.

Ps 51:16-17

For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased. The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

This whole episode actually deepened Abraham’s capacity to obey God and developed his character. Abraham faced agonising choices. Step by step faith and hope triumphed over fear and doubt.

So what does it tell us for today?

We are Christians who follow a God who knows something of personal sacrifice. He himself, sacrificed his only Son on a cross of wood, his Son was made to carry to Golgotha. Unlike in Abraham’s case, there was no intervention to save him. And in return, his only Son Jesus, never argued when the time came but gave his life willingly to die for the sins of everyone.

Following such a God will cause all sorts of inner turmoil- bringing challenges we never expected.

Often God’s action in our lives is compared to refining a metal ore, dug out from the ground. The beauty of the metal is held hidden within. Life’s challenges are like the ore being heated up and the metal being extracted and refined until its true beauty is revealed. The whole process allows the true nature of the metal to be seen in a new light.

Life’s challenges, especially when very difficult, can make us feel insecure and alone. But we are never really alone, because we have faith. We believe that God walks with us. It is these challenges that bring out the true nature of our faith, an ongoing process, refinement after refinement, until at last its beauty can be truly seen in the light of God.

9 One day Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, was playing with Sarah's son Isaac. 10 Sarah saw them and said to Abraham, “Send this slave and her son away. The son of this woman must not get any part of your wealth, which my son Isaac should inherit.”

11 This troubled Abraham very much, because Ishmael also was his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, “Don't be worried about the boy and your slave Hagar. God has heard the boy crying. 18 Get up, go and pick him up, and comfort him. I will make a great nation out of his descendants.” 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well. Sermon

We’re in the story of Abraham and Sarah – one of the big, epic sagas about God and his work through people long, long ago. Though these are ancient accounts, they are also God’s words to us. So the Holy Spirit speaks to us through them.

As we listen to our readings, we’re asking those questions : -

What does this tell us about God?

God has called Abraham and Sarah to follow him. They walk out into the desert from their original home to follow God’s leading and rely on his promise to make them the foundation of a great nation – which will bless the whole earth. They will have as many descendants as there are stars in the sky.

So God is for all people. God’s plans are for the whole earth- all its people and all living things. Though God works through particular people at particular times, God has no favourites.

And in all the subsequent wanderings, mistakes and failures of these people, God remains faithful. It takes a long, long time- but the unexpected son is born. Isaac.

God fulfils his promise. God is faithful even when his people are not. God doesn’t desert these people even when they deliberately do things that aren’t in his plan. (though they do have to live with the consequences of what they have done…)

And God stands by those who are caught up in it all- through no fault of their own. God intervenes to rescue Hagar and Ishmael who have been thrown out by Abraham and Sarah. Indeed Ishmael’s name means “God sees” – God saw the injustice of what happened to them. God gives Hagar and Ishmael their own inheritance and promise.

What does it tell us about the people in the story?

Well- God’s people, even the ones who He has especially chosen to use, get things wrong. Following God faithfully is hard. God’s promises to Abraham and Sarah must have seemed a long way off. After all they’d given up so much and it’s no wonder that Sarah takes things into her own hands. That’s where Hagar comes in. She’s Sarah’s slave; Sarah tells her that she is to be their surrogate. If Abraham and Hagar have a son, then Sarah has hurried along God’s plan nicely. But it’s not God’s plan. Sarah thinks she has solved her problem but actually she’s made things worse. Because God is still faithful to her, even when she’s not faithful to Him.

So when Sarah’s son, Isaac is born, she’s jealous of Hagar and Ishmael. She’s caused the problem and now she’s living with the consequences. And once, more Sarah tries to fix it. She doesn’t do it herself- she makes Abraham do the dirty work. Send them away! I wonder if she could have stopped herself. I wonder if she could have owned what she and Abraham had done in the first place and kept Ishmael and Hagar with them.

God speaks into this mess. God is still here, still faithful, still rescuing. Hagar and Ishmael have been wronged. God intervenes on their behalf.

He has a long term plan for them and a more immediate miracle. Long term, Ishmael too becomes the father of a nation and in the short term- God’s angel directs them to water when the run out.

The people in this story make a right mess of things. Make a mistake; make the mistake worse; get jealous, are weak, abuse others. But God hasn’t given up on any of them.

What does it tell us for today?

Who do you identify most with?

Impatient, conniving but very practical Sarah- wanting to fix things. Impulsive, not having thought things through, she has to live with her mistakes. But she’s also cruel and heavy handed and makes other people suffer.

Abraham- he’s a bit spineless. He can see what’s wrong but goes along with it anyway.

Hagar – might not be entirely blameless- in an earlier version of this story (Gen 16) she openly mocks Sarah. But she has so much less power than the others. And baby Isaac and the young man Ishmael are caught up in it all.

I think there is a warning here for us about listening to God and holding onto what’s right. Even when the going gets tough, and we wait a very long time for God’s intervention, taking a short cut, thinking that the ends justifies the means, is not good. Our mistakes may come back to haunt us.

But there’s also encouragement. The mess of human relationships, the complications we get ourselves into- are not new to God. He has heard it all before. And He is faithful to his promises, rather than counting on our behaviour.

And He sees those who have been wronged and rescues them.
